History of Icmeler

Icmeler used to be a village where nobody went or visited other than the villagers. Marmaris, the bigger city 8 km away from Icmeler even used to be a small holiday resort.

As Marmaris got popular in the 80’s and got discovered by foreigners visiting this city, Icmeler slowly started developing. Investors saw Icmeler as the next place of tourists. Marmaris got bigger and bigger and became a world-wide resort for people all over the world. Even forests and hills around Marmaris turned into big hotels and resorts. The total number of restaurants and bars in Marmaris doubled each year serving some 3 million tourists a year. Icmeler meanwhile was just a place now to go and see the village life in Turkey. Hotel developments got faster as more tourists came to see Icmeler. Marti was the only resort at the time, and was know for it’s quiet, by the nature location. This all changed in 10 years, from 1990 to 2000, many hotels, aparts, restaurants , bars, shops etc were built and Icmeler was now a top-class resort. It was big enough to serve everyone’s needs yet so small that everyone visiting or working there felt like they were all neigbours.

That is now what makes Icmeler different than the other places to visit. It has this magic to it and once you stay there over night, you don’t want to stay anywhere else but there. People who have been to Icmeler before know about this and mention it everytime they get a chance.

Icmeler is also very special with its location. It is situated on a big bay with a beach that goes all the way to Marmaris. Lots of green, all low size buildings which makes you feel at ease and live athmosphere where it makes you think everyone on this destination resort is happy with their lives. This is usually true. There are people working in Icmeler who choose to work in Icmeler eventhough they could make more money somewhere else. Oh, one more thing, almost every Turkish fellow who works in Icmeler has a nick name so that people who can’t speak Turkish can refer to them easily…doesn’t that tell you something about the people of Icmeler…very very caring and friendly…maybe its because if one thing goes wrong in Icmeler, everyone in Icmeler will know:

Turkish Bath

Once upon a time, starts the story of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, complaining with the incurable longlasting headaches. The doctors of that time couldn’t find a remedy for the treatment of the illness.
One day a young man came with a solution which was hard to believe. The solution was a soap-massage in a Turkish bath .
Now and then ; complaining from body pains, long lasting headaches, giving up excess body-weight, desire for feeling fresh and young addresses you to a “Hamam” where you feel like a new-born person.

If you’re after the perfect tan, one of the best ways to start it off is with a trip to the traditional Turkish bath (known in Turkey as a ‘Hamam’). Here’s what to expect when you get into your local hamam. It is an experience that never ceases to give you enjoyment, not just because a Turkish Bath leaves you feeling “squeaky” clean, but because it is also something so different to back home.

Before the days when people had bathrooms in their homes- this was where all the locals went to not only get themselves cleaned up, but to meet all their neighbors and have a good old gossip. Once you go inside, you will be shown to some cubicles where you undress down to your swimsuit and wrap yopurself in the towel provided (called ‘pesternal’) and then proceed to a large, domed-shaped room called ’gobek tasi’.

This room is completely lined with heated marble-floor, walls and bench seats with a large square marble ‘table’ in the middle of the bench-type seats are old-fashioned taps underneath each tap a saucepan-sized copper bowl. Everyone in the room will sit around and built up really good sweat- this is to soften your skin and open up all your pores.

That is where the bowls come in- if you got too hot, you filled them with lukewarm water from the taps and pour it all over yourself. While this is all happening, there are some big, muscular bath attendants waiting to rub you down (no, I’m not joking). One at a time, you all get to take your turn on the big marble table. The bath attendant rubs you down from head to toe with what you would call a loofah. It is at this stage that you get really embarrassed-not because of the rub down but because of the dirt that will come off your body-heaps of it and all black. It is quite normal. You won’t believe how clean you will feel afterwards. While everyone is getting his or her ‘rub-down’ you will continue to pour water over yourself and generally have a good laugh with your fellow “bath mates”! The bath attendant has not finished with you yet…

You will return to the slab for your ’soaping’ and massage. The attendant fills a sort of thin, cotton pillowcase with soap and then proceeds to cover you in rich, creamy, white, soap suds (It sounds like one of those soap adverts), then he begins the massage. It is at this stage that you are definitely begin to ‘nod-off’ - You will feel so warm, clean and relaxed-but the attendant has no intention of letting you get a few minutes shut-eye. It is the best experience ever.

Your unused-for-some-time muscles are kneaded, your fingers and toes are stretched and a general feeling of well-being come over you. After the massage, you will then taken to another room with loungers or benches and given a hot glass of apple tea or relax before getting dressed. It is at this point that you definitely fall asleep and have to be woken up by the bath attendant! Never in your life have you felt so utterly relaxed and squeaky-clean. You will have the best night’s sleep ever. We highly recommend the Turkish bath experience- you cannot go to Turkey and not experience the real thing Turkish bath .

We advise that you do not book Turkish Bath trip with any tour company. There are only two good Turkish bath facilities in Marmaris and most tour companies will not take you there because they have better interests if they take you to a Bath at a Hotel. Don’t fall into that. Find a tour company that will take you to the best one in Beldibi area.

Turkish Night

If this is your first time in Turkey and never been to a Turkish Night, we strongly recommend you go to one! Belly Dancers, Turkish folkdance, Turkish food and wine, a lot of laugh and audience participation. The program usually starts at 20:30 and goes on till midnight. Turks really know how to have fun all together.

We would like to warn you beforehand that if you sit on the outer edge of the tables, you are more likely to be picked on. In one of those audience participation moments will provide the biggest laugh when many guy victims join the belly dancers and have their shirts removed and do their best to copy the movements of the belly dancers. What a laugh!

Marmaris offers a few Turkish Night Show places. We recommend ‘Kervansaray’. They are the professionals and the best show groups work with them. A lot of groovy Turkish music, good food and free wine all night long. Enjoy!

JEEP SAFARI

Eat Dirt…JEEP SAFARI

Sitting in the morning traffic on your way to work, running late again , your stress level rising like the pollution from the exhaust fumes, you ask yourself, “is this what life is all about?”.

You begin to fantasise about your forthcoming holiday to Turkey and wish you were already there… Imagine you are wearing your oldest clothes, scarf tied around your head like a pirate with your sunglasses to the ready.

You set off in convoy, being driven by your “guide”, into the hinterlands of your resort. You drive you could lead through refreshingly cool, tall, green forests or across peninsulas with sea on either side and where nature is only an arm’s length away. You immerse yourself in the stunning views from mountain lookouts and wonder in amazement at the crystal clear blue azure sea and rugged coastline.

Paddle in blissful peace along the shore or douse yourself in a mountain spring or seek out waterfalls to dive into.Experience first hand the hidden secrets of Turkey, witnessing the welcoming waves of playful children along the roadside, as you pass through the sleepy villages and luscious cultivated plains.

Respect the continuous toil of the villagers out in their fields reaping and sowing in their traditional way under the hot summer sun (the ladies in their baggy pantaloons and headscarves)- you can remember this whenever the urge to complain about modern living strikes you!

Think about lunching somewhere traditional and authentic and laughing and joking with your fellow adventure seekers, feeling energised by the simplicity and quality of life and will wonder at the landscape, so raw yet so magnificently striking.Feel the sheer exhilaration of the wind blowing through your hair and the warm sun shining down on you as your convoy heads for home, leaving you with that “outdoor” glow so rarely experienced back home-well, don’t just imagine-try it!

Pamukkale

Pamukkale, a lot to see. Pamukkale (Hierapolis) is both, a magical and spectacular natural site, unique in the world and with its ancient ruins it is perhaps one of the most attractive spot for tourists. Pamukkale is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in Turkey. Dozens of coaches daily make the long excursion, (three hours drive) from Bodrum), Marmaris or Kusadasi. Stay over-night if you can to enjoy its tranquility early in the morning or in the evening.Over thousands of years, hot mineral waters had burst from the earth to run through the ancient city of Hieropolis before cascading down over a cliff. These waters contained a high content of calcium, which solidified into snowy white travertine; waterfalls of white stone inlaid with layer upon layer of small pools filled with this calcium-rich warm mineral water. When you go up through the middle of these travertines to the plateau at the top you will find the ancient city of Hierapolis. Today, several hotels have been built on this plateau to cater to the many visitors to this famous spot and they now served as a ‘welcome break’ to the visitors . There are thermal pools set amidst the travertines. These waters are said to have ‘healing’ powers for all sorts of ailments such as stiff joints, skin irritations and so on. There is also another small pool halfway down the cliff, and sitting in this pool is like sitting in a bath, but a bath in the outdoors with an incredible view of the valley below. The other pool, larger size and situated within the walls of one of the hotels. Here you will come across the most incredible swimming pool you’ve ever seen. Many refer to it as Cleopatra’s pool. The water is the same warm, mineral water that is found in the travertine pools but the base of the pool is strewn with ancient ruins that you can swim around and gaze upon, almost like an underwater museum. People travel from far and wide to see and swim in this pool together with the smaller ‘rock’ pools. You will feel like Cleopatra yourself, languidly floating face up in this warm water soaking up the sun overhead. Maybe you have never felt so relaxed before in all of your life.

The only castle that is not intended for Warfare

You will travel through some of the most incredible scenery ever to get to Pamukkale: Little Turkish villages that time had passed by; fields ripe with cotton for picking; Turkish ladies in their baggy pantaloons and head scarves working the fields whilst their husbands sat under the trees or in the Tea Houses having a game of backgammon (equal rights, I ask you?). In front of the most incredible sight, in the distance you will see this dazzling ’slash’ of white as though snow had decided to fall in this one particular spot and had forgotten to fall on the rest of the landscape. By getting closer, you will realize it is white ‘rock’ covering the cliff side and not snow.

SNOW? MIRAGE? CLOUD?

There are thermal pools set amidst the travertines. These waters are said to have ‘healing’ powers for all sorts of ailments such as stiff joints, skin irritations and so on. There is also another small pool halfway down the cliff, and sitting in this pool is like sitting in a bath, but a bath in the outdoors with an incredible view of the valley below. ANCIENT CITY OF HIEROPOLIS

Ancient City of Hierapolis is situated close to the travertines. The city of Hierapolis was a cure center, famous for the health-giving properties of its mineral waters and hot springs. Founded in about 200 BC it prospered under the Romans (as a spa) and later the Byzantines. It had a large Jewish community and an early Christian church. The city was destroyed by earthquakes at least four times and in 1334 the people decided it was not an healthy place to live after all and moved on.

Long after the city was named Hierapolis for the Pergamum Queen Hiera, the world Hierapolis took on another meaning- ‘Templeville’. This was because of the extraordinary number of temples erected at the city. The most striking discovery during recent excavations was plutonium found near the Temple of Apollo. The best-preserved ruins are the Roman Baths and the Theatre. Wonder around the Roman Baths, you might feel to be approximately 1800 years old, and through the many halls of the building used as private rooms for the Emperor. One of the rooms now serves as a museum and you will see some fabulous artifacts that are now on display. Continue to the boundaries of the city walls, well preserved with their large bastions, to the ancient burial ground called ‘The Necropolis’. This graveyard is one of the largest to be found in all of Turkey with more than 1200 tombs and sarcophagi. You could have wandered around all day, totally enthralled, but once again, there are many other incredible sight for you witness…

EPHESUS

EPHESUS… The Jewel of the Eastern Roman Empire”Magnificent, awe-inspiring, brilliant, amazing, excellent, outstanding…. these are just a few words that may go a quarter of the way to describing what has to be one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites. However, nobody could really succeed in describing Ephesus with words, no matter how articulate they may be. Ephesus has to be seen with one’s own eyes to be fully appreciated.”

Although the dates may not coincide, when one wanders through the city of Ephesus, films such as Spartacus, Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments come to mind. With most archaeological sites throughout the world, a great deal of imagination is required to try and visualize what life must have been like thousands of years before - not so with Ephesus. Visitors can wander through the city’s streets and see with their own eyes the way people lived and the houses and buildings in which they lived and worked.
Many people who have seen other sights like pyramids of Egypt and the City of Pompeii say these sites pale to insignificance beside the brilliance of Ephesus.

If you enjoy History, or if you are interested in seeing Virgin Mary’s House and you don’t mind taking 4 hours of bus journey you should definitely take this trip. … The Jewel of the Eastern Roman Empire
